How Obesity Increases the Risk of Infection and Hospitalization

A big study that came out in The Lancet in February 2026 found a strong link between being overweight and being hospitalized or dying from an infection. Researchers used a lot of health data from Finland and the UK to show that being overweight greatly raises the risk of getting serious infections.

The results are very scary. People with class III obesity (BMI 40 or higher) are three times more likely to get sick and die from infections than people who are at a healthy weight. Even being overweight (BMI 30 or higher) raises the risk by about 70%. Researchers also think that obesity may be responsible for almost 10% of all deaths from infections around the world. Because of this, obesity is not just a problem with how people live, but a serious health issue around the world.

How Being Overweight Makes You More Likely to Get Serious Infections

Obesity has a lot of hidden effects on the body. Too much body fat causes inflammation that lasts a long time. This inflammation that keeps happening weakens the immune system, which makes it harder for the body to fight off viruses and bacteria. Because of this, infections may get worse and be harder to treat.

Obesity is also linked to diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. These health issues make the risk of complications from infections even higher. People who are very overweight may have trouble breathing, which makes respiratory infections like pneumonia more dangerous.

The good news is that losing weight, even a little bit, can make your immune system stronger and lower your risk of getting sick. Eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and seeing a doctor regularly are all very important.

Keeping a healthy weight isn’t just about how you look. It is a strong step toward avoiding hospitalization due to infections and protecting long-term health.
